To be honest, this doesn’t even need to be stated. A scientific theory doesn’t merely mean a conjecture or a hypothesis; according to the United States National Academy of Sciences, “The formal scientific definition of theory is quite different from the everyday meaning of the word. It refers to a comprehensive explanation of some aspect of nature that is supported by a vast body of evidence.”

I do not have a problem with personal belief. Belief in things is an intrinsic part of the human experience; we go to bed believing, for instance, that we’ll wake up the next morning; it’s not a certainty, but because we went to bed yesterday and woke up today, we assume that the same will occur again tomorrow. This is an assumption. Not a fact. We cannot conclusively prove it to be true; we simply expect it, based on events that have happened before. However, in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, the logical and rational mind should change and adapt; it should readjust its initial premise based on new information.

Someone once told me that the way our brain is believed to work is very strange; it makes certain assumptions about the world based on sensory inputs, and then will fail to process new inputs unless these new inputs change its assumptions about the world. This, it is hypothesised, is why the elderly will sometimes fall down the stairs. This makes sense to me; the mind treats walking up stairs as an automatic action, and will not stop to consider each step - but when the body gets older and less physically capable, and perhaps each step isn’t as long as it once was, a slight stumble, or trip, could occur. What continues to baffle me is when sensory inputs clearly reject a particular belief or viewpoint, and the brain chooses to ignore it - analogous to someone tripping down the stairs on purpose, because they chose to believe that the stairs were further apart then they actually are.

Facts are governed by reality, not human perception. Teach, celebrate, and understand evolution. Set the standard for a more scientifically literate tomorrow.
